If you’re serious about skin health, you need to be serious about sun protection. It’s even more important here in New Zealand, thanks to our depleting ozone layer and the fact that our country has the highest skin cancer rate in the entire world. Add to this that sun damage is the number one cause of aging of our skin (a recent study showed daily sunscreen users aged a full 24% less than occasional wearers!) and you have reason enough to not go a day without it.
Most sunscreens on the market use chemical UV blockers (rather than physical protection such as zinc oxide), which studies have found could be toxic to us. Researchers have found that sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate (the most common sunscreen chemicals, used in most of the brands you’ll find in chemists and supermarkets) have been killing coral reefs, so much so that Hawaii has banned these sunscreens on their beaches. They can’t be good for our bodies!
We love mineral sunscreen. It protects us against both UVA and UVB, is better for sensitive skins, lasts longer on our skin and protects as soon as it is applied. Plus, zinc oxide is a safe and healing mineral that’s been used for centuries for skin conditions, unlike the ingredients in chemical sunscreens
